Capital Impresses On Debut

Billy Egan winning aboard Capital Express at Cranbourne

It was the debut that most owners wish for when Capital Express got her career off to the perfect start at Cranbourne on Friday night. The Nick Ryan trained 2 year old was well fancied in the betting when markets opened, off the back of a pair of very impressive Flemington jump outs.

A solid $2.80 favourite for the days leading up to the event, Capital Express drifted late as money came for a host of other runners. Jumping as a $4 elect, Jockey Billy Egan took the filly by Ilovethiscity straight to the front and controlled the race.

“she jumped well and was very clean into stride” Egan said of Capital Express. “When the horse of Brent Stanley’s came and sat outside her, she became tense and held her breath so I had to let her slide forward again.”

“She became lost around the bend, and was soon challenged upon straightening” Egan explained. “When they moved up to her in the run home she kicked away, but would wait for them once she put a length on them. They would level up and she would put another length on them”

Egan was impressed by the filly and said she would benefit a lot from the Experience.

Kate Watts commented on the rockstar welcome that Egan received when coming back to scale, from the large group of owners that were trackside to see Capital Express ply her trade for the first time.

Express Racing director, Darcy Judd was full of praise for Egan.

“It was a great ride from Billy” Judd stated. “She is a horse with a fair few quirks and we needed a senior rider on her tonight. Billy got her into a good rhythm and she showed a great will to win and got the job done for us.”

“It was a fantastic effort from Nick and his team to produce this Filly to win first up tonight and I can’t thank them enough”

When asked where to next for the speedy 2 year old. “I will have the discussion with Nick when the dust settles, but it would be very tempting to have a throw at the stumps in a race like The Showdown in 3 weeks time”.

Capital Express was a $25,000 purchase for Express Racing Pty Ltd from the Inglis Melbourne Premier sale. She has now had 1 start for 1 win banking $27,650 prize money from that first start.
